Egypt is a place you have to experience in person. For many Black American travelers, it’s also a journey to the land of Kemet and Nubia, at the heart of African history. At Amon Ra Tours, we welcome Black American travelers and Black-led groups with expert Egyptologist guides, comfortable hotels, and private transport, all arranged for you.
A little preparation makes the trip smoother. Here are our 10 essential tips.

1. Sort out your visa before you fly
US passport holders need a visa to enter Egypt. You can apply online through the official e-visa portal or buy one on arrival at the airport. Fees have changed recently and are currently around $30, so confirm the price and use only the official website. Your passport should be valid for at least six months from your entry date.
2. Get a local SIM or eSIM
Staying connected makes it easy to use maps, message your guide, and share photos with family. Ask us for help choosing a good option when you arrive.
3. Learn a few Arabic words
English is common in tourist areas, but a simple shukran (thank you) or salam alaykum (hello) always earns a smile.
4. Dress comfortably and modestly
Egypt is a predominantly Muslim country. Light, breathable clothing that covers shoulders and knees works well for temples, mosques, and local neighborhoods. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and comfortable walking shoes.
5. Drink bottled water and protect yourself from the sun
Summers are hot and dry, so drink plenty of bottled water. Sunscreen is important for every skin tone, and it’s smart to pack your favorite hair and skin-care products, since your exact brands may be hard to find.
6. Try the local food
Egyptian cuisine has something for everyone, including many vegetarian and vegan dishes. Tell us about any allergies or dietary needs before you travel and we’ll arrange your meals accordingly.
7. Carry some cash and plan for tips
Cards are accepted at hotels and larger venues, but small bills in Egyptian pounds are handy for markets, restrooms, and tips. Tipping is customary for guides, drivers, and hotel staff. Your guide can advise on fair amounts.
8. Enjoy the markets, and bargain with a smile
In bazaars like Khan El Khalili, prices are often negotiable. Ask the price, counter politely, and walk away if it doesn’t feel right. Bargaining is friendly, not rude.
9. Confirm prices and currency
Before you pay in a shop or restaurant, confirm the total and whether it’s in Egyptian pounds or US dollars. Your guide can help you avoid misunderstandings.
10. Expect different hours during Ramadan
Ramadan is expected around February to March 2027, with exact dates depending on the moon. Many restaurants and shops change their hours, and major sights remain open. We’ll plan your itinerary around it.
